When I think of starting a career or making career choices, I envision a ship leaving the harbour - able to go anywhere, traveling to endless possibilities, lots of excitement, many adventures awaiting.

But just as a ship leaving the harbour needs a destination and clear nautical charts, so we need a clear plan when choosing a career path. Many (dear I say most) find choosing their future career very daunting.

So what do you do?

At ThinkingForwardSA we provide a guidance option to make these daunting decisions less so. I like to think of our Career Guidance Package as a rudder of sorts, giving gentle guidance to help you get to where you need to go.

With regards to skills, if we apply ourselves, we can acquire most any skill we desire. But aligning the career skills we learn with our natural thinking processes will most likely, to quote Marie Kondo, “spark joy” (job satisfaction, passion).

Think about a people-oriented R2 with an interest in science. He/she could be an excellent medical technologist or laboratory researcher (skill) but may never have the job satisfaction he/she could have had if applying his/her interests in an occupation where there is opportunity to connect with others, teach, bring people together, organise functions, outings and meetings (natural thinking preference) etc. - think high school science teacher for example.

Doing your NBI Brain Profile, understanding your preferred thinking patterns, accessing a list of jobs that match your profile and comparing your profile with the profiles of careers you may have an eye on, makes decision-making slightly easier.

So leave fear behind, stop guessing - this may be a ‘rudder' worth considering.
